RIVERTON — Evan Sharpe has a special date today in Halifax.
Sharpe has been named Special Olympics Nova Scotia’s male athlete of the year for 2018 and is among recipients of various awards being honoured during presentations this evening at the 24th annual SONS Inspired Gala in Halifax.
He was honoured for his achievements on Team Nova Scotia at the 2018 Canadian Special Olympics Summer Games in Antigonish, his first National Games. He received a silver medal from placing second in his 200-metre freestyle race.
He also participated in the 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre individual medley events.
Sharpe is considered an all-round athlete, but his two main sports are swimming and curling.
He started swimming at the age of 10 and became competitive soon after. He tried various winter sports and ended up choosing curling as his winter sport.
He is part of the curling team in Pictou County that has won either silver or gold medals over the last five years.
That feat earned Sharpe and his teammates the Team of the Year Award at last year’s Inspired Gala.
