ANTIGONISH – A former member of the Pictou County Weeks Crushers is among members of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men who were suspended after a recent hockey brawl.
Third-year student Regan Spears was suspended for one game as an instigator and one game for fighting after the brawl broke out during the third period of the X-Men’s game last Saturday against the host Acadia Axemen in Wolfville.
Two other X-Men were assessed two-game suspensions for fighting and five other X-Men will miss two games for leaving the bench during a fight.
A ninth member of the X-Men will serve five games for leaving the bench and being the third man in a fight and for his second game misconduct of the season.
X-Men Head coach Brad Peddle is also gone for two games.
Six players and the head coach of the Axemen were also suspended.
A statement by St. FX indicated that a derogatory comment related to a sexual assault survivor and directed at a St. FX player led to the brawl.
AUS executive Phil Currie announced the suspensions, which he said are automatic and take effect immediately as part of the first phase of the AUS review process, which leaves the possibility the more disciplinary action will be rendered later.
Spears, who is from Port Hood, was a productive forward with the Crushers when they won the Maritime Hockey League championship in 2016.
He has four goals and seven assists in 25 games this season with the X-Men.
Athletic director Leo MacPherson confirmed that the X-Men will ice an adequate roster for its last two regular-seasons during road games at UNB today and UPEI on Saturday.
