Andre Pettipas and The Giants has big news to share. But not just yet.
First, the Antigonish-based rockers have a busy summer ahead with performances at several music festivals, including the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee on Friday.
“I think overall since last time we played in New Glasgow, our show has improved immensely, so gonna be something fun to see all the familiar faces with these new songs and of course, the familiar ones that we’ve let out over the years,” said vocalist and guitarist Andre Pettipas, noting the group added a new member late last year with guitarist and back-up vocalist John Macdonald. The line-up also includes Travis Pettipas on bass and back-up vocals and Pictou County’s Marcus Cosh on drums and backing vocals.
They’re in in the middle of working on their newest album No Fools, No Fun — a title named after a phrase said to Andre by a friend of his father. For a week in early June, they travelled to Chalet Recording Studio in Ontario to track seven songs with producer and mixer Brian Moncarz, who has worked with bands like Our Lady Peace and The Tea Party. Recorded live off the floor, Pettipas said having everyone in the same room captured their energy and the feeling of their live show better.
“We actually finished a full day ahead of schedule because it was just going so well and the vibe was there.”
They head back to the studio to record a few more songs in October.
One of the things they’ll be announcing at a later date is some of the people involved in the album, one of whom is a guest on a song from his favourite band.
Pettipas said they met some “good people” during Canadian Music Week and have another announcement to share, but they can’t release it yet.
“Everybody puts the hard work in and it’s nice to see stuff finally paying off and the outside eye noticing what’s been going into what we’ve been doing,” Pettipas said about their news.
For now, they’re excited to play the Jubilee.
“I’m a big Kim Mitchell fan. I’m looking forward to watching him side stage singing Go For A Soda. That’s probably top 10 songs for me.”
