NEW GLASGOW — Two local schools are hosting the Nova School Athletic Federation’s 2019 cross country running championships this fall.
North Nova Education Centre and New Glasgow Academy will be the hosts for the event on October 28 at Trenton Park. Opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. will precede the first of six races beginning at 11:30.
There will be more than 600 runners from across the province competing. Some local athletes will be in contentions for top spot in their age category.
“A goal for our county is to have every middle and high school to have teams participating in these championships,” said Pat Carty on behalf of Pictou County Athletics.
In conjunction with cross country running there are extra running practices for all interested from grades 6 to 12 and adults at Trenton Park on Fridays and Sundays starting on September 5. The workouts will last from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Athletes are preparing for the cross country season after practising and competing in school district, regional and provincial events last spring.
Cross country is among federation sports this fall that also includes baseball, football, golf and soccer.
Volleyball, hockey and basketball begin in the late fall.
