Sports

The Pictou County Weeks Crushers will play two pre-season games against the Truro Bearcats this week.

The teams will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre and at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Truro.

The Crushers are trying to rebound after missing the playoffs last season. They won one of three games during an early bird pre-season tournament in Summerside.

They opened with a 3-0 victory over the Amherst Ramblers and a 6-3 loss to the Edmundston Blizzard on Saturday before the host Summerside Western Capitals shut out the Crushers 3-0 on Sunday.

Aiden Hickey and Matthew Burden scored for the Crushers in the second period, while Andrew Burden added their third goal in the third period against the Ramblers.

Goaltender Andrew MacLeod recorded the shutout.

The Crushers were outscored 2-1 in each period against Edmundston.

Samuel LeBlanc scored in the first period, while Brayden Ryan tallied in the second period and Colin Parker scored in the third period.

The Capitals scored twice in the second period and once in the third while outshooting the Crushers 38-22.

The Crushers will play their first three games at home on successive Thursdays. They will host the Fredericton Red Wings on September 12, the Ramblers on September 19 and the Bearcats on September 26 before visiting the South Shore Lumberjacks on September 28.

Meanwhile, Pictou County traded Dylan Schofield, Adam MacDonald, a conditional first-round pick in the 2021 draft or a conditional third-round pick in the 2020 draft, a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft and future considerations to the Valley Wildcats for Keenan Gillis, Ethan Beaulieu and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft.
