International Climate Strike Friday in New Glasgow

Community Featured Online First

Youth, and now people of all ages around the world are striking in order to promote climate change awareness, demand that world leaders make urgent changes, and encourage adults to consider the environment first when voting.

Last Friday, Sept. 20, more than 4 million people from countries all around the world were striking. Pictou County will be joining this Global Climate Strike movement this Friday by holding a second Climate Strike. The first strike in Pictou County was held May 24 in the towns of Pictou and New Glasgow simultaneously.

Pictou County Climate Strikes is a youth-led movement demanding action on climate change. There will be a peaceful demonstration held on Sept. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Carmichael Park in New Glasgow. The youth of Pictou County will be joined by people of all ages, as well as local politicians and members of the Town of New Glasgow in speaking up for the environment. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come – bring your friends, family, co-workers, staff and students. Bring posters promoting climate change awareness. There will also be an open mic for those wanting to share speeches, music, poetry, etc in support of environmental protection.

The Fridays for Future movement began in August 2018, after 15-year-old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. She posted what she was doing on Instagram and Twitter and it soon went viral. Greta decided to continue striking every Friday until the Swedish government provided concrete action to address climate change – and the Fridays For Future movement was born. She has since sailed on a zero-emissions sailboat to the United States to speak at the United Nations Climate Summit, and she will now be coming to Montreal for the Global Climate Strike this Friday,.

This incredible movement of students and young people taking action on climate change and fighting for climate justice is continuing to grow. All around the world youth and adults alike are striking from school and work in protest of the lack of action on the climate crisis.
