Grand Slam opening draws tonight at Pictou County Wellness Centre

Today’s the day: The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curing 2019 Tour Challenge begins at the Pictou County Wellness Centre with the opening draw at 7 p.m.

The Tour Challenge will feature 31 top men’s and 31 women’s teams from around the world divided into two tiers of 15 men’s and 15 women’s squads (Tier 1) and 16 men’s and 16 women’s (Tier II). This is the first curling event and the largest Grand Slam event to be hosted at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. 

The first eight games are scheduled for today at 7 p.m. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Many of the world’s finest curling teams have been arriving for the tournament to practise through the afternoon before scheduled games on both ice surfaces.

Tier  I teams on the Sobey surface include: 11-time Grand Slam champion Team Gushue  from St. John’s, N.L., reigning Olympic gold medallists Team Hasselborg from Sundbyberg, Sweden, 2019 Pinty’s Cup champion Team Koe from Calgary and defending Tour Challenge winners Team Homan  from Ottawa and Team Jacobs from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

In the Aliant rink, Tier II, competition will feature a number of Atlantic squads that include Team Arsenault from Halifax, Team Birt from Charlottetown, Team Brothers from Halifax, Team Crawford from Saint John, N.B., Team Glynn from St. John’s), Team Hilliard from Halifax, Team Murphy from Halifax), Team G. Smith from St. John’s, Team Stevens from Halifax), Team K. Thompson from Halifax, and Team S. Thompson from Dartmouth.

Both Sobeys Arena and Aliant Arena have been converted for five sheets of action.
