LYONS BROOK — The West Pictou Wolverines went undefeated in their invitational middle school girls’ basketball tournament on Saturday at the West Pictou Consolidated School gym.
The Wolverines dominated the opposition with pressure defence, which created scoring opportunities through transition and set offence.
The Wolverines were in Pool A with Pugwash and Springhill, while Dr. W. A. MacLeod of Riverton, South Colchester from Brookfield and Oxford were in Pool B.
They defeated Pugwash 54-35 in the championship game on Saturday.
West Pictou took an early lead and defeated Pugwash 47-33 on Friday. MacLeod topped South Colchester 34-20 and Pugwash outscored Springhill 49-31 in Friday’s other games.
The Wolverines placed first in their pool after defeating Springhill 56-20. They advanced to the championship with a 59-14 victory over Oxford.
MacLeod finished first in Pool B after topping South Colchester 34-20 on Friday and edging Oxford 30-29 on Saturday but lost 33-31 to Pugwash in their crossover match.
South Colchester nipped Springhill 35-33 in the third-place consolation match.
