NEW GLASGOW — A 68-year era has passed for Quality Cleaners Ltd.
The dry cleaning outlet is closing the retail section of the business, while its commercial laundry and dry cleaning operations will continue.
Owner-operator Bob Wong said several factors have contributed to his decision that includes loss of staff, regulations and rising business costs.
He said there was a risk involved in ensuring the business could do quality work for its customers.
“Two (employees) decided they wanted to retire,” he said. “I would say it was a downward roller coaster and has been for some time.”
He has worked there for more than 40 years, taking over from his father who established the business in 1951.
“It’s sad,” he said. “We had six trucks on the road at one time. We’ve been operating for over 60 years so we have some long-time customers. We’ve covered a lot of generations.”
Wong posted several signs around his counter to alert customers to the changes.
Retail cleaning was discontinued on November 26, while the front office will remain open with reduced hours so that customers can pick up their cleaning. The front office will close effective December 31.
He said the business employed up to 11 people and will have a staff of five for the commercial business.
