NEW GLASGOW — Santa Claus is coming to town … on Dec. 8.

The annual New Glasgow Fire & Rescue Santa Claus Parade will take place beginning at 5:30 p.m. in downtown New Glasgow. The parade will once again begin from Granville Street and follow the same route down East River Road, onto Archimedes Street, onto North Provost and then up Provost Street ending at Stewart Street.

The theme for this year’s parade is once again Holiday Light Up and the parade committee encourages entries to support this theme and to have fun with it by being creative and festive.

“We wanted to continue with something that was Christmas related, but broad enough for our parade entrants to really have fun with, when planning their floats,” said Art MacLean, co-chair of the parade committee. “The theme allows for a diverse range of entrants to participate focusing on culture, community, youth and music.” All entrants are encouraged to illuminate their floats in some way and to also include music.

“It promises to be a magical event and a great kick off to the holiday season,” said Mayor Nancy Dicks. “I am looking forward to participating in the parade once again this year with some special guests joining me in the historical barouche.”

Honorary Grand Marshall will be the Pictou County Y Service Club Women, a service organization that provides support and volunteer services to the Pictou County YMCA and community. The club supports local causes such as YMCA Day Camps, YMCA Youth Leadership, YMCA Program Needs, Pictou County Food Bank and Pictou County Fuel fund to name a few.

“The Parade Committee has been working hard planning an exciting parade and trying to bring in some entertaining new entrants, while continuing the traditions of parade’s past,”says MacLean. “We are pleased to once again have the Kinsmen and Kinettes Clubs of New Glasgow conducting their food drive for the Pictou County East Food Bank.”

Anyone interested in participating in the parade can contact Paula Munro-Fraser by email: or by calling 902 759 7483. Or pick up an entry form at the New Glasgow Fire Department, Dalhousie Street or at the New Glasgow Town Office, 111 Provost Street.

There will be a parking ban on Provost and Archimedes streets from 4 until 8 p.m. and the parade route East River Road to Stewart Street will be closed from 5:15 until 8 p.m. Any vehicles parked on the parade route after 4 p.m. will be towed at the owners’ expense.

The parade route starts at the Aberdeen Business Centre, Granville Street to East River Road, down Archimedes Street, onto to North Provost Street and down Provost Street to end at the top of town on Stewart Street.
Glasgow Square Theatre parking lot will also be closed from noon to 8 p.m. for the Annual Tree Light Up that will take place immediately following the parade.
