PICTOU — The Rotary Club of Pictou will present one of the most beloved musicals of all time in 2020.
Director Don Hill announced the club will present The Sound of Music from March 26 to 28 at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre.
“As one of the most popular musicals ever with some of the best music ever written for the stage, I know it will be fun and rewarding to bring our version to the deCoste Centre stage,” he said.
The Sound of Music was composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics from Oscar Hammerstein II.
It is one of the most popular musicals and is a legendary mid-20th century offering that achieved wide acclaim through a long initial stage run on Broadway starting in 1959.
The movie version that followed in 1965 became the highest grossing film at the time, surpassing Gone With The Wind in 1960s dollars.
The stage version has had numerous productions and revivals over the years.
It is actually a musical drama due to the fact that it is based on The Story of the Trapp Family and is presented against the backdrop of the growing Nazi menace in late 1930s Austria.
Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel were the leads on stage, while Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer were the film’s lead actors.
