PICTOU — Skate and sledge try-it events have been scheduled for December 29 at Hector Arena.
The Town of Pictou and the Municipality of Pictou County are co-hosting the free skate and the opportunity to try the sledges from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m.
Active Pictou County owns the 11 sledges, which are generally located at the Pictou County Wellness Centre for a program offered there each Sunday.
The holiday gave the municipalities a second chance to feature them when the original sledge event was considered so successful.
It happened several days after Pictou Academy’s scheduled wellness day was postponed when all schools in the region were closed due to inclement weather. The wellness day has been re-scheduled for January 10 and includes trying out sledges at the arena.
Pictou Parks and Recreation co-ordinator Michelle Young and Clare Steele, the rural municipality’s active communities co-ordinator, have organized the events.
“Michelle and I felt it would be a good opportunity,” Steele said. “We had the sledges there and we were ready to see what happened. The kids were excited to try something different. It’s not just people who need a sledge. It was really awesome that all the sledges were being used. It’s definitely worth it with the kids so excited.”
The free skate is designed for those who want to utilize the ice for skating, as well as viewing a sledge demonstration, Steele said.
“We have a focus on accessibility but didn’t want people to think they couldn’t come and skate,” she said.
Arena manager Ron Clarke welcomed the opportunity to features the sledges.
“It’s a family skate that’s overlaid with the sledges,” he said. “I haven’t seen them in use, but I think it’s a great opportunity for more ice rentals.”
Youngsters gather on their sledges during a recent try-it event at Hector Arena. Another skate and sledge event is scheduled for December 29. (Submitted photo)
