PICTOU — Karla MacFarlane, Progressive Conservative MLA for Pictou West, wants to know why the McNeil Liberals have neglected including a representative from Pictou County on the Forestry Transition Team.
“The impending closure of Northern Pulp will have an immediate effect on forestry workers in Pictou, so it is both surprising and shortsighted that Stephen McNeil has appointed a Forestry Transition Team with no representation from Pictou,” said MacFarlane.
When the Michelin plant in Pictou announced layoffs in 2014, the premier selected local business owners to help oversee the action team. While a number of community leaders in Pictou County are prepared to help in the transition, none have been appointed to the Forestry Transition Team.
“Pictou County has been hurt particularly hard. Local Regional Economic Networks (REN) have significant impact, influence and knowledge with respect to their communities,” said MacFarlane. “On behalf of the people of Pictou, I’d like to know what efforts the McNeil Liberals have made to consult with the REN in Pictou County and to ensure Pictou is represented throughout the transition.”
