Nighthawks’ win opens hockey tourney

WESTVILLE – Luke Young’s two goals paced the Northumberland Nighthawks to a 6-2 victory over the Strait Area Educational and Recreation Centre of Port Hawkesbury on Friday to open the 2020 Danny Dorrington high school boys’ hockey tournament at the Westville Miner Sports Centre.

Connor MacLeod, Sam Hickey, Cam MacKinnon and Jayden Hatchard also scored for the Nighthawks, who took a 5-1 lead and outshot SAERC 44-13 over the game.

The tournament is played in memory of Danny Dorrington, who had a long association with hockey in Westville and elsewhere in Pictou County.

The Nighthawks were scheduled to meet the Central Kings Gators this evening after opening ceremonies slated for 7:15 p.m.

They will test West King’s at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday to complete their preliminary schedule in Pool A.

Other teams in Pool B include the North Nova Gryphons, whose scheduled includes Par-En-Bas on Friday and games against Clare at 11:45 a.m. and the Gillis Royals of Antigonish at 6:45 p.m.

The winner of Pool A and the second -place team from Pool B are slated to meet at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the winner of Pool B  and the second team in Pool A at 11:15 a.m.

The winners will contest the championship at 3 p.m.
