WESTVILLE — The Northumberland Nighthawks have set the stage for some interesting hockey games to come.

Jayden Hatchard scored in overtime on Sunday as the Nighthawks captured the 2020 Danny Dorrington high school boys’ hockey tournament with a 3-2 victory over the Central Kings Gators.

The eight-team tournament featured some of the teams that could join the Nighthawks when they host the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation’s Division One boys’ championship in early March.

The Nighthawks had several chances to win the game in overtime, including a shot on an open net that Hatchard slid past the far post. They needed Matthew Carson’s late goal to tie the game after the Gators took a 2-1 lead.

Cameron MacKinnon also scored for the Nighthawks, who outshot the Gators 45-26.

The Nighthawks advanced to the championship earlier on Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Ecole Secondaire de Clare, while the Gators blanked the North Nova Gryphons 5-0 to reach the final.

Luke Young’s two goals paced the Nighthawks to a 6-2 victory over the Strait Area Educational and Recreation Centre of Port Hawkesbury on Friday to open the tournament at the Westville Miner Sports Centre.

Connor MacLeod, Sam Hickey, Cam MacKinnon and Hatchard also scored for the Nighthawks, who outshot SAERC 44-13 over the game.

Sam Hickey and Carson scored for the Nighthawks in their 5-2 loss to the Gators later on Friday.

Hickey scored as the Nighthawks qualified for the cross-over matches on Saturday with a 1-1 tie against West Kings.

The Gryphons tied two of their preliminary games.

Ross Martin scored twice in a 5-5 tie with Ecole Secondaire de Par-En-Bas, from Tusket, N.S. Ben Turnbull, Scott Long and Tanner Steele also scored for the Gryphons.

Blaise MacDonald’s two goals helped North Nova to a 4-4 tie against the Gillis Royals of Antigonish. Cam Lynds and Cameron Young added their other goals.

Lynds and Kirk Turnbull scored in the Gryphons’ 5-2 loss to Clare.

North Nova advanced to the cross-over when weather prevented the Royals from playing the game.
