NEW GLASGOW — Work has gone inside in an effort to complete construction of the Pictou County YMCA’s new child care centre.

It is expected to open later this winter on the site of the original Brown School on the corner of Mountain Road and High Street.

Samantha MacDonald, the Y’s director of child care, recently led a tour of the new facility that features separate entries for the different age groups — pre-school in the front, toddlers on the side and infants in the rear.

MacDonald said she appreciates how bright it is throughout the building. “It’s wonderful — all these large windows,” she said.

The facility has been designed to serve 50 children. The pre-school area has room for 16, while there is also room for 18 toddlers. The two areas for infants also have sleeping areas.

There is also a kitchen with staff room and storage area, as well as a service door.

Registration for families already on the waiting list was scheduled to start on Monday and can be done at the Y’s front desk at the Pictou County Wellness Centre with a deposit. Registration will be open to the public on January 27.

“Once registered, the spots are guaranteed,” she said.

MacDonald has worked at the Y for almost seven years and has also operated after school programs. She became the Y’s director of child care in December.

“I’m excited about this. There’s such a need, and it’s going to be a welcome addition.”
