WESTVILLE – Connor MacLeod scored twice as the Northumberland Nighthawks started the their quest for a Northumberland Region high school hockey banner with a decisive 6-2 victory over the visiting North Nova Gryphon on Wednesday afternoon at the Westville Miners Sports Centre.
Jayden Hatchard and Matthew Carson each had a goal and an assist for the Nighthawks, while other goal scorers Sam Hickey, Joseph Mason and Liam Berthiaume.
Cam MacKinnon had two assists, while Dylan Kontuk, Luke Young, Brycen MacDonald, Lucas Fraser and Cal Maxner added single assists.
Ross Martin and Adam Farrell replied for North Nova with Blaise MacDonald assisting on Martin’s goal.
The game was a spirited affair with a penalty-filled third period. Tempers continued to escalate until the final buzzer.
The teams will meet for the second game of the best-of-three series on Friday at 7 p.m. in Trenton.
Game three, if necessary, will be n Westville on Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Nighthawks’ win followed their 3-1 loss to the Hants East Tigers on Sunday in the championship game of the Northern High School Hockey League playoffs in Trenton.
Keegan Murray scored the Nighthawks’ lone goal early in the third period with the Tigers leading 2-0. The Tigers’ third goal was into an empty net.
Joseph Mason scored three goals, while Matt Carson and Jayden Hatchard each had a pair as the Nighthawks reached the final after defeating the J.H. Gillis Royals 7-3 on Saturday.
