Finding the right wellness practitioner

At its core…finding the right practitioner for your wellness treatment – whatever that treatment may be – is a lot like finding that perfect hairdresser…. Or mechanic.

The same basics concepts apply.

You need to check certain criteria boxes before you become involved in this new, dynamic and deeply personal relationship:

Are they reputable?

Are they going to provide the treatment that you feel you most require?

Do they listen to you, when you tell them what you need?

When you tell them how you feel, do they take what you’ve said into consideration?

After their initial meeting with you, have they developed an impression of your condition, or situation. One based on their professional experience and their sound, natural observational abilities?

Would they like to discuss their impressions with you – so that you can work together to facilitate healing?

The relationship between you and your practitioner is a special energy. Based on respect, effective communication and a mutual goal. If you come away from your session feeling as though you have helped your facilitator through the last hour… you may be taking on too much.

It’s so important to feel heard by your practitioner. We automatically become resistant to situations that don’t feel right to us. This is natural and important. If your massage therapist uses a lot of pressure in their touch and you are someone who is very reactive – your muscles tense up and that defeats the purpose of the massage.

It’s the same with energy and emotional vulnerability. If you feel too self-conscious, or ill at ease, you probably won’t express all you need to. In a case like this, you may not get the most from your session.

As someone receiving therapy, we need to be flexible, so that we can open up and release the old, tired and outdated patterns. It’s hard to do that if we don’t feel comfortable.

We can’t always know what actions we need to take, when we intellectualize our situation and lifestyle, on a conscious level. The beauty of the therapist, or practitioner, is the ways in which they can assist us – as we shine a light on those less visible aspects of ourselves.

Think of your practitioner as the side mirrors on your car – they’re designed to help you see your blind spots.

We may go into a session feeling very sure that we know exactly what the problem is…

When I go to my mechanic, I march right in and tell them all about the problem I’m having with my alternator – because, to be honest, this is the only part of the car I can identify – they smile politely, say it’s nice to see me; but I should understand my problem has nothing to do with the alternator.

Like my mechanic, I need to be able to trust my practitioner. To trust that they see what I need and is making appropriate judgments when they say, “this other thing you haven’t considered, and don’t know anything about – that might require your attention”.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how well-known, or well-respected a practitioner is. If they don’t strike that authentic chord within you – then they may not be for you.

The practitioner is a facilitator, they don’t heal you – you create that transformational alchemy, within yourself. Find someone that you sense will encourage this form of growth.

Trust your instincts. There is no shame in deciding to go in another direction when you feel it’s time. You deserve the best and there are many talented practitioners out there who can help.
