NEW GLASGOW – The North Nova Gryphons are Division I female high school hockey champions.
The Gryphons went unbeaten and shut out host Par View 4-0 on Sunday in the championship game.
Erin MacNeil opened up the scoring in the second period with a short-handed goal, while Rylan Biron followed late in the second period with the Gryphons’s second goal.
Keighan DeCoff scored late in the third period, while Allie Sandluck scored the second goal with 30 seconds left. Kelly Harnett got the shutout
The Gryphons advanced to the final by edging Lockview 3-2 on Saturday.
The Gryphons were in Pool A with Halifax West, Avon View and Auburn Drive.
They opened on Friday by defeating Auburn Drive 5-2 and shutting out Avon View 3-0. They completed the preliminary round by downing Halifax West 7-3.
Emily Hayes, Kristen Dewar, team captain Ashley Livingston and alternates Jayden Palmer and Allie Sandluck are graduating players on the Gryphons’ roster.
Keighan DeCoff is the other alternate on the team that featured six Grade 9 players.
Coaches are Kevin Willett, John Chisholm and Randy Palmer, while Marilyn Sandluck is the manager.
The Northumberland Nighthawks also played in the championship and were in Pool B with Park View, Lockview and C.P. Allen.
The Nighthawks were winless in their three games, dropping decisions by 4-1 to Park View, 3-0 to Lockview and 3-2 to C.P. Allen.
