WESTVILLE – The Northumberland Nighthawks had their work cut out for them after dropping the opening game of the Division I boys’ provincial high school hockey championship on Friday in Westville.
The Auburn Eagles dominated the host Nighthawks for most of the game on Friday to open the schedule with a 7-1 victory.
MacLean Tobin scored the Nighthawks’ lone goal early in the third period with Auburn already ahead 6-0.
The Nighthawks are in Pool A with Auburn, as well as the Riverview Reds and Halifax West Warriors.
The Reds followed the Eagle’s win by defeating the Warriors 3-1.
The Nighthawks and Riverview will meet at 5:40 p.m. following the opening ceremonies today and will face the Warriors at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday.
Both are pretty much must-wins for the Nighthawks to advance to the semifinals later on Saturday. Those games will be played at 6 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.
The winners of those games will play for the championship starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
