NEW GLASGOW – The United Way of Pictou County has exceeded its 2019 campaign goal.
The agency formally announced its fund-raising total of $361,379.55 during a ceremony in front of its office on Tuesday.
“We’d like to thank everyone for continuing to trust and support us,” campaign chairman Marc Comeau said in a press release. “Donations to our annual campaign ensure that we can continue to work together with our local partner to make positive, sustainable impacts on Pictou County.”
Proceeds from the 2019 campaign are shared with 18 local agencies and 20 local programs and services.
In addition, the local United Way is also directing $19,593 in donor designations towards registered charities.
“The generosity of the people of Pictou County ensures we can continue to tackle persistent issues that are preventing far too many individuals and families from getting ahead,” executive director Ellen Fanning said. “Our aim is to alleviate the conditions of the most vulnerable today and help build a stronger, more prosperous Pictou County for everyone. We appreciate all of the efforts and contributions from businesses, organizations, workplaces, employee and individuals.”
Fanning paid tribute to Leaders of the Way co-chairs Irene Sobey Aucoin and Gilles Aucoin for leading that part of the campaign for individuals who make donations of $500 or more. The leaders funds totaled $164,316.28, or 52 per cent of the campaign’s total.
Young Leaders of the Way chair Kaylin Comeau-Leil was saluted for helping to raise$3,200 in young leaders’ gifts of $150 for those up to 35 years old.
Also assisting with the celebration were Comeau-Leil’s son Kit Leil, community investment committee chair Laura Clarke, youth board member Arianna Williams, treasurer Matt March and board member Thivjan Tharma.
The local United Way this year will be marking 60 years serving the residents of Pictou County.
Special events to celebrate the milestone will take place in the coming months.
