Dragon Boat Festival cancelled for this year

There will be no Race on the River in New Glasgow this year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the unknowns surrounding it with regards to self-distancing and no large gatherings, the Board of Directors is concerned about moving forward with this year’s New Glasgow Race on the River Dragon Boat Festival.

A press release from the board says, “It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors has decided to cancel the New Glasgow Race on the River Dragon Boat Festival for 2020. It is difficult to think that a community event that brings people together to support three wonderful beneficiaries would need to be cancelled because of this world pandemic, causing everyone to separate.”

Because the annual event is a fundraiser, this decision will have a financial impact on the three charities it supports: Women Alike Breast Cancer Survivors Society, Special Olympics Northern Regions, and Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Association. “Therefore, we are welcoming any donations from our sponsors, businesses, and individuals, which we will pass along to our beneficiaries.”

The safety of the dragon boat community is the board’s top priority and it acknowledges that cancelling this year was a “heart-breaking decision.”

“We would like thank our community for their continued support of our event. We as a community can get through this together. We look forward to a successful Festival next year in 2021!”
