Longtime volunteer Shawn McNamara has announced his candidacy in the upcoming municipal election as a town councillor in Pictou.

“I’ve always enjoyed helping out, whether it is for the need of the people or the need of the community,” McNamara says.

The father of five and grandfather of 13 has been a resident of Pictou for 44 years and previously served on town council from 2002 until 2012.

Retired after working at Michelin for 44 years, McNamara is also a businessman with plenty of experience in the food industry. He operated Shawn’s Burger Bus for several years and now operates Lyons Brook Pizza.

Many know McNamara from the seven years he spent as chairman of the annual Pictou Lobster Carnival. In 2015, the volunteer was recognized for outstanding community involvement with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Rotary Club.

In addition, he has served on the Pictou Recreation and Parks Committee for the past 17 years, has been a member of the Pictou and Area Lions Club for eight years and can often be found helping out the Pictou West Food Bank.

“I love Pictou and helping Pictou,” McNamara says.

Speaking of his plans as a councillor the candidate says, “I will encourage greater involvement of the citizens, small businesses and organizations for a better Pictou. I enjoyed my previous experience on council and I would be honoured to work as a councillor again.”

He says, “Voting is a privilege and everyone should exercise that right in having a say in how our community should be run.”

Due to the current health pandemic McNamara will not be campaigning door to door but says anyone can contact him at 902-771-0493 to discuss concerns or issues.
