Neptune stage will light up with Christmas classic

Neptune Theatre will stage its holiday-classic adaptation of Dickens’ a Christmas Carol, written and directed by artistic director Jeremy Webb and featuring Rhys Bevan-John as Ebenezer Scrooge.

Dickens’ a Christmas Carol is a special presentation and not part of Neptune’s subscription season. It will run Nov. 24 to Dec. 27 in Fountain Hall; this is the first production since the theatre closed its doors on March 13 due to the global pandemic.

“We know how special it is for families to come together and share in the magic of live theatre, especially during the holiday season,” said Neptune’s artistic director Jeremy Webb. “We’re very excited to be opening the theatre again for this fun, family show.”

“We’re keeping a close eye on the pandemic in the province, of course,” he added. “We are following guidelines and protocols to keep everyone safe, but I do see this production as a first step in reopening the theatre.”

Starting November 24, the performance will also be available on Neptune at Home, the theatre company’s new digital platform. The show is part of the Neptune Subscription or it can be rented for $15 (fees and taxes included).

“It was a strange thrill to be filming the show (for Neptune at Home) back in August,” says Rhys Bevan-John. “I have played the role in many venues over the last five years, but to be the first live theatre experience at Neptune since March is a huge honour.”

A long-standing holiday tradition on the theatre scene in Halifax since premiering in 2003, Webb’s adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has also toured across the province and into the United States to critical acclaim. Webb originally starred in the production, playing more than 20 roles with Bevan-John as the puppeteer. In 2015, Webb took a seat in the director’s chair and Bevan-John stepped into the spotlight to play the beloved characters of Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and many others, with Simon Henderson as the puppeteer. Jessica Lewis is the show’s lighting designer and stage manager.
