Local hockey fans will be able to travel to Summerside, PEI, in 2022 where The Fred Page Cup will be contested.
The Summerside Western Capitals have officially been named the host of the Eastern Canadian Junior A Championship for the first time in franchise history.
The tournament will feature the hosts from Summerside along with the playoff champions from Quebec (LHJAAAQ), the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) in Ontario, and a second Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) representative, either the Canadian Tire Cup champion or finalist should the Western Capitals appear in the league championship.
“The MHL is pleased to announce that Summerside has been chosen to host the 2022 Fred Page Cup,” says MHL President Steve Dykeman. “There were some very solid applications to host the tournament but ultimately the selection committee felt that Summerside had the strongest bid package. We are looking forward to working with the Host Committee to create an exciting event in 2022.”
“We are thrilled to add yet another championship to Summerside’s hosting repertoire. We thank the CJHL and the Maritime Hockey League for endorsing Summerside as the host City for 2022,” commented Mayor Basil Stewart. “This event endorsement is a great example of our City continuing to push forward in light of the global pandemic.”
This is the second time that P.E.I. been the host of the Fred Page Cup. The Charlottetown Abbies held the tournament in 1999, which they won before ultimately falling in the final of the Royal Bank Cup, now the Centennial Cup as the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) National Championship. Summerside hosted the 2013 Royal Bank Cup at Credit Union Place.
“What welcomed news it is to have been selected as host City for the 2022 Fred Page Cup,” commented JP Desrosiers, director of Community Services. “As the event Chair we are excited to present what will no doubt be one of the most successful in the events storied history. Despite a global pandemic our team has been working hard on event hosting opportunities post-pandemic and today’s announcement is a great example of this work.”
The 2022 Fred Page Cup will be held May 3-8, with the winner advancing to the Centennial Cup in Estevan, Saskatchewan.
