Pictou County residents have shown their resilience and generosity in the face of adversity.
More than $45,000 was raised during the Pictou County Christmas Fund’s virtual fundraising campaign.
The online event featuring the talents of local artists wrapped up over the weekend, with a grand total of $45,200 raised in support of Pictou East and West Food Banks.
The mandate of the PCCF is to help families in need over the Christmas holiday, and although the fundraiser looked different this year, the PCCF Board of Directors’ commitment to the community remained the same. This year, the online campaign ran for a one-month period Nov. 12-Dec. 12 on Facebook.
“We are very thankful to the generous people in Pictou County for donating to the fund this year,” said PCCF chair Debbie Van Sickle.
“The telethon was postponed due to the pandemic but the board stepped up and held a virtual event. We were able to raise $45,200 to assist families this year. Thank you to all who made a donation.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional telethon fundraiser — held annually in late November — was cancelled for 2020. Limits on the numbers of crowd gatherings and social distancing made it impossible for the volunteers to safely host the telethon at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre in Pictou while also ensuring the safety of volunteers and community members, as well as spend several days registering people for assistance then distributing the gift cards that are purchased with the funds raised through the telethon. But the worldwide health pandemic did not stop the fundraisers or the performers. Holiday cheer was shared virtually on the PCCF’s Facebook page and the community still showed lots of support with online and in-person donations.
Volunteers with the Pictou County Christmas Fund have been raising money for more than 40 years to help local families in need enjoy a Christmas dinner with all of the fixings.
Anyone needing assistance this year can register directly with the Pictou County Food Bank, and they will be supplied with everything needed for a holiday meal. Food Bank volunteers can be reached at: (902) 755-2906 Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. The last day to register before Christmas is Monday, December 21.
Lia LeClair, a volunteer with the Pictou County Food Bank (East), expressed her thanks to the committee. “We are very thankful for the wonderful donation to the food banks again this year. We can assist many families with the donation. Thank you for helping.”
COVID-19 did not stop the music and talent! While the traditional telethon could not be held this year due to the worldwide health pandemic, volunteers with the Pictou County Christmas Fund put their heads and hearts together with local talent to host a virtual fundraising campaign in which more than $45,000 was raised for Pictou County food banks. The cheque was presented on Monday to Pictou County Food Bank (East) volunteer Kyla Boehk, left, from PCCF board chair Debbie VanSickle. (Contributed photo)
